The phinisi cruise scene built around Labuan Bajo is one of the most photographed in Asia, but the ground operation behind it is improvised. Vessels move between Bajo Marina, Marina Bayview, and the older Pelabuhan jetty depending on tide, weather, and which crew is available to handle ropes that morning. There is no central cruise terminal. There is no dispatch board telling arriving guests which pier to walk to. The driver who picks you up at LBJ either knows your vessel’s habit, or you stand on the wrong dock for 20 minutes with rolling luggage.

For the Singapore-Scoot Thursday arrival at 17:40, the typical phinisi gangway boards before sunset, which means we have a 90-minute window from wheels-down to vessel boarding. We stage one Hiace at the airport before your flight lands so the loop is tight: arrivals → meet board → gear loaded → marina → tender → vessel — under 60 minutes for a Zone A marina.

How our cruise transfer works

Booking: Tell us your vessel name, departure date, and pier (we’ll confirm if unsure).
Vessel match: We pull the vessel’s typical pier. If it differs that day, the captain or expedition leader updates us by 09:00.
Phone confirmation: Driver carries a printed sheet plus a phone with your vessel’s name and a captured image (deck shot, burgee, or mast detail).
Live flight tracking: From wheels-up. A delay of 90 min or more reroutes our dispatch automatically.
Meet point: Same arrivals hall name board.
Drive: Direct to the right marina or jetty for that day. AIS and tide check before departure if your boat is anchored offshore.
Tender coordination: If the vessel is at anchor, we WhatsApp the deck crew so the tender meets you at the pier within 5 minutes.
Dive gear handling: Free bundling of 4+ sets in the Hiace (see diver transfer).
Return runs: Post-cruise pier pickup with a 30-minute buffer after expected dock time.

Vehicle recommendation

Phinisi cruises typically board 6–18 guests, often as couples or small dive groups. For 4+ guests with full kit (cruise + dive), the Toyota Hiace is the default — 10 captain seats, room for 14 large bags. Solo or couple cruise guests with light luggage fit the Toyota Innova at $25. For luxury cruise lines (Aman, AYANA Lako di’a, Aqua Blu) where the brand expectation is meet-and-greet, we recommend the Toyota Alphard — captain seats, ottoman, individual climate. Some operators specifically request the Alphard for VIP arrivals from Singapore or Bali.

Frequently asked questions

My phinisi cruise departs from a different pier than the one I was told. What now?
Tell us as soon as you know. We re-route on the spot — the four main piers (Bajo Marina, Marina Bayview, Pelabuhan, and the AYANA/Sudamala tender point) are all within a 4 km arc, so a pier change adds at most 5 minutes. If the change happens after you land, your driver gets the update in real time and adjusts.

My cruise is anchored offshore. How does the tender work?
Most luxury phinisi anchor in Bajo Bay or off the AYANA/Sudamala beach. The vessel sends a tender (small motorboat) to the marina pier on a fixed schedule — typically 17:30 or before sunset on day one. We WhatsApp the deck crew on departure from the airport with your ETA so the tender is at the pier within 5 minutes of your arrival.

Do you handle multi-day expedition cruises with dive operations (Aqua Blu, Tiger Blue)?
Yes. These are our most-frequent cruise transfers. The expedition leader typically WhatsApps us a vessel ETA the night before, and we sync the airport pickup within a 60-minute window of dock time. Dive gear bundling in the Hiace is included.

Can you pick us up directly from the cruise pier on disembarkation?
Yes. Tell us your scheduled dock time and your departure flight. We add a 30-minute buffer to dock time and dispatch on captain confirmation. Most cruises dock between 07:00 and 11:00 on the final day. Round-trip booking saves 10%.

What if my cruise leaves earlier than my flight lands?
Then you have a connection problem with your booking, not a transfer problem. We can hold your bags at our office and arrange a hotel for the night — but the captain is unlikely to wait. Buffer flights to Komodo by at least 4 hours before scheduled boarding.

Will the driver wait if my flight is late?
Yes. We track your flight from wheels-up. A delay of 90 minutes or less is logged and the driver is updated. Beyond that, we re-stage the dispatch and the driver waits without any additional charge — fixed price applies regardless. Vessel captains are notified so they hold the tender if possible.

Do you handle large cruise ships (not phinisi)?
Larger expedition vessels (Sequoia, Aqua Blu, Coralia) all use the same pier system and we handle these routinely. True international cruise liners do not currently call at Labuan Bajo, so this question rarely comes up — if it does, we coordinate with the port agent in advance.
