Loccal Collection Komodo sits on a cliff-side ridge above Labuan Bajo’s western harbour, 4.5 kilometres from Komodo International Airport. The drive takes thirteen minutes — the longest in our Zone A inventory, and entirely because the hotel’s gate is at the highest road point south of the marina.

Your driver leaves LBJ via the airport access road and follows Jalan Yos Sudarso along the bay. After passing Bintang Flores and Pelabuhan Marina, the route turns inland onto a steady climb through Pante Pede, then bends right onto the cliff road. Loccal Collection’s signage appears at the second bend, with the modernist gatehouse at the top.

The approach is the experience. The road climbs through limestone cuts, ocean views opening out on the right side at every switchback. By the time you pull into the hotel’s gravel forecourt, you’ve already understood why guests pay the price. The lobby itself is a cantilevered timber pavilion overlooking the bay — open-air, no glass between you and the islands.

About Loccal Collection Komodo

Loccal Collection is a 36-room boutique hotel opened in 2020, designed by Indonesian architect Tan Tjiang Ay’s studio with a brief to make a property that photographs as well in person as on Instagram. The result is the most-shared hotel in Labuan Bajo’s social-media share-of-voice — every angle of the property has been engineered for natural light, sea backdrop, and minimalist composition.

The clientele skews international: Singaporean creatives, Australian honeymooners, European design-aware travelers, plus a steady draw of Jakarta-based Instagram talent and travel content creators. The infinity pool sits over the cliff edge, the open-air restaurant Lualu serves Indonesian small plates with a Mediterranean lean, and the rooms are deliberately spare — concrete, timber, linen, with the bay view as the only decoration.

The trade-off is the climb. Walking down to town takes twelve minutes; walking back up takes 25 minutes through Labuan Bajo midday humidity. Most Loccal guests pre-book transfers for restaurants and excursions. The hotel’s own concierge will arrange these, but at hotel-margin pricing.

The Alphard makes the strongest case on this route — for honeymooners and aesthetic-first arrivals, the cabin’s ottoman footrests and ambient lighting align with the property’s design language. Why pre-book to Loccal Collection

Loccal’s concierge will arrange a one-way airport transfer at IDR 450,000–550,000 — the property uses a small roster of partner vendors and applies a hospitality margin. Our direct rate is IDR 410,000, same vehicle category, no markup, USD-locked.

Curb taxis at LBJ will quote IDR 250,000–350,000 but commonly charge a “luggage surcharge” once seated, and the cliff-road approach has been used as a justification for inventing a “hill route” upcharge. We have logged guest complaints about LBJ taxis demanding IDR 500,000 at the Loccal gate. With us, the price is locked in USD at booking and the driver does not negotiate.

Grab is functionally unavailable for Loccal Collection — the cliff-road geofence rejects most app pickups, and the hotel’s gate is invisible to the Grab driver until they arrive. Pre-booking direct is the only smooth path.

Is the cliff road safe in heavy rain?
Yes. The road is fully paved and our drivers handle it daily. In the December–March wet season, occasional landslides have closed sections of the upper road for a few hours — our drivers re-route via the inland service road if needed, no surcharge.

Can I do a photo stop on the way to the hotel?
Yes. There’s a designated cliff overlook 200 metres before Loccal’s gate with the best Labuan Bajo bay panorama. Our drivers pause for 30 seconds free; longer photo stops at $10 per 30 minutes.

Will my driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. We track your inbound flight from departure airport in real time. The first 30 minutes after wheels-down are included; additional waiting at $5 per 15 minutes.

Does Loccal accept early check-in for arrivals before noon?
Loccal’s standard check-in is 14:00. The lobby will store luggage and offer pool access from your arrival time. Our driver helps coordinate this if you message ahead on WhatsApp.

Is there an extra charge for the climb?
No. Loccal Collection is within our Zone A pricing — 4.5 km is the inner limit. The cliff approach does not add to your USD price.
