There is no international rental counter waiting at Komodo Airport, and the Trans-Flores Highway that leaves town is a narrow mountain road of hairpin bends, sudden fog and slow trucks. Which car should you take? For two to four guests with normal luggage, the Innova is the honest answer: it is the workhorse of Flores for a reason, steady on long climbs and unfussy about rough patches. Groups of six or more, film crews and divers travelling with gear bags do better in the Hiace, where nobody rides with a bag on their lap. The Fortuner suits guests who want SUV height and comfort on the winding sections, and the Alphard-class exists for one job: arriving somewhere looking like you meant it.

What a day with a driver-guide looks like

Your driver collects you at your hotel at whatever time suits your plan, and the day is yours: linger where you like, skip what bores you, stop for photographs whenever the valley opens up. The driver handles fuel, parking, village etiquette and lunch recommendations, and because he is a guide as well as a driver, you get context for what you are looking at rather than silence from the front seat. Your bags stay locked in the car while you walk, and the air conditioning is waiting when you get back.

Multi-day Flores overland trips

Wae Rebo, 2 days 1 night

Wae Rebo is the trip most guests ask about, and the first thing to know is that it is not a day trip. The drive from Labuan Bajo takes four to five hours, the forest trek up to the village takes another two to three hours on foot, and guests sleep overnight in the cone-roofed drum houses before trekking down the next morning. Our two-day, one-night Wae Rebo arrangement is around USD 190 (±IDR 3,000,000); the village donation is a separate amount paid in Wae Rebo itself. Anyone who promises you Wae Rebo and back in a single day is selling you fourteen hours of car and a mountain trek in the dark.

Kelimutu and the far east

The three-coloured crater lakes of Kelimutu sit far to the east of Flores, and reaching them overland is a three-to-four-day journey through Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende. Most guests drive one way with us and then fly out of Ende or Maumere rather than doubling back, which turns the trip into a proper crossing instead of a long return drive. Crossing Flores end to end

A six-day crossing of Flores works out at six times the daily car rate, which puts the vehicle and driver-guide at around USD 570 for the whole route. Along the way you can take in Ruteng’s rice fields, the traditional village of Bena near Bajawa with its megalithic stones and thatched houses, and the volcanic country around Ende, before finishing at Kelimutu for sunrise. When to book

In the dry season, roughly April to November with July and August at the peak, the cars and the best driver-guides are spoken for days ahead, because the same fleet is running airport pickups, harbour drops and touring days at once. Multi-day trips need more notice than a city day: Wae Rebo requires the overnight arrangement to be set up before you leave town, and a Flores crossing needs hotels booked along the route. Two or three days of notice is usually enough for a day tour; give us a week or more for the long overland runs and you will have first pick of vehicle and driver.
