Arrival Tips & Guide

Practical advice for arriving in Labuan Bajo — from pre-flight prep to your first afternoon at the gateway to Komodo.

In Brief

A little preparation makes all the difference at Komodo Airport (LBJ). This guide covers what to do before you fly, what to expect on landing, and how to make your first hours in town count.

Before you land: preparation that saves time

Confirm your visa status before departure. Citizens of 90–plus countries can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA, IDR 500,000 / ~USD 35, valid 30 days, extendable once) at any Indonesian international gateway. Flying via Bali (DPS) means you clear immigration there and arrive at LBJ as a domestic passenger — no further formalities on landing. An e-VoA applied online before departure lets you use the faster e-channel desk.

Book ground transport before you leave home, not at the kerbside. When multiple flights land in the same morning window, taxis fill quickly. A pre-booked transfer with a named driver and fixed price means you walk straight to your sign. If connecting to a liveaboard, share the boat name and check-in time so timing is coordinated from the outset.

At the airport: what to expect when you land

LBJ has a single arrivals corridor. The flow is: aircraft → immigration (international first arrivals) → baggage carousel → customs → arrivals hall. Passengers who cleared immigration at Bali or Jakarta proceed directly to baggage, cutting processing time considerably. The VoA counter sits before the immigration desks — have IDR 500,000 or a card ready; e-VoA holders go straight to the e-channel.

Past customs, the arrivals hall has an ATM, SIM card kiosks, a taxi rank, and a tourism desk. Your pre-booked driver or our meet-and-greet assistant waits with a name sign just past the exit. A fast-track assistant, if booked, meets you before the immigration queue and guides you through the priority lane.

Your first hours in Labuan Bajo

The drive from LBJ to the waterfront is 10–15 minutes. Most restaurants, dive shops, and mid-range hotels line Jalan Soekarno-Hatta along the harbour; the premium resorts (AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach, Plataran Komodo, Meruorah) sit a few kilometres further along the coastal road. If you are spending a night before a boat trip, do three things: confirm your departure time and pier with your operator, withdraw Rupiah cash (BRI/BNI ATMs near the harbour — cash is preferred on the water), and pick up any last-minute supplies from a pharmacy or minimarket.

If your energy allows, walk the harbour at sunset. The bay faces west, and on clear days the island ridgelines of Komodo and Rinca against the evening sky are exactly as spectacular as advertised.

Six Things to Know

Quick Arrival Tips

01

Withdraw Rupiah Early

ATMs at the airport and harbour dispense IDR. Most boat activities and local warungs are cash-only.

02

Get a Local SIM

Telkomsel has the best coverage in Labuan Bajo and around Komodo. Buy at the airport SIM counter — bring your passport.

03

Time Your Landing for Boats

Liveaboards depart early (6–8 am). Fly in the day before to avoid a rushed airport-to-dock sprint.

04

Dress for the Tropics

Pack light, quick-dry fabrics. Closed shoes for Komodo dragon treks; sandals are fine at the harbour.

05

Book Your Transfer Ahead

Don’t rely on kerbside taxis when flights stack up. A pre-booked transfer removes all uncertainty from your first 15 minutes.

06

Peak Season Queues

July–August and Christmas/New Year bring heavy volumes to LBJ. Fast-track is especially worthwhile in these periods.

Arrival Tips — Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t find your answer? Our concierge replies on WhatsApp 24/7 — usually within minutes.

Ask the Concierge
01 Do I need to book transport from LBJ in advance?

We strongly recommend it. Taxi availability is limited and pricing can spike when multiple flights land. A pre-booked transfer with a fixed price and flight tracking removes the uncertainty entirely.

02 Where do I get Indonesian Rupiah in Labuan Bajo?

ATMs are in the arrivals hall and along the waterfront (BRI, BNI, Mandiri). Use your home bank network for the best rates; money changers operate in town too.

03 What is the best time of year to visit Komodo?

The dry season (April–October) offers calm seas, reliable dive visibility, and less rain. July and August are the busiest months; April–June and September–October give good conditions with fewer crowds.

04 Can I use ride-hailing apps in Labuan Bajo?

Gojek and Grab have limited, inconsistent availability. For airport connections, a pre-booked transfer is far more dependable.
