What makes Bena worth the drive
Bena is the best known of the Ngada megalithic villages and among the oldest continuously inhabited places on Flores: two facing rows of high-roofed wooden houses step down a stone-terraced ridge, with megalith slabs and ancestor shrines — the carved ngadhu poles and the miniature bhaga houses — standing in the central plaza. Mount Inerie, a near-perfect volcanic cone, rises directly behind.
And it is a living village, not a museum: families cook, dry coffee and weave ikat between the monuments, and visitors are welcomed with a guest book and a small entry donation at the gate. Walk to the small viewpoint at the far end of the terraces in late afternoon — the ridge drops away toward the south coast, the light goes gold on Inerie, and the midday tour buses are long gone. That timing is exactly why we schedule Bena for late afternoon.
Getting there from Labuan Bajo
There is no shortcut. Bajawa sits roughly halfway across Flores and the Trans-Flores road earns its reputation for bends, so driving it in one push takes around eight hours.
We split the journey in Ruteng and treat the road — Melo, the Cancar spider-web rice fields, the ridgeline villages — as part of the trip rather than an obstacle. Be honest with yourself about the return leg: it is another eight hours. If that sounds punishing, take the 4-day pace with a second night in Ruteng on the way home — or better, do not come back at all, and carry on east.
Better still: make it an etape of the Kelimutu overland
Bena sits naturally on Day 2 of our Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu overland. Instead of retracing the road west, you continue east to Ende and Moni, catch sunrise over Kelimutu’s three crater lakes, and fly back from Ende or Maumere.
Same daily rate, no repeated kilometres — for roughly one extra day you trade a long return drive for one of Indonesia’s great sunrises.
Bena or Wae Rebo — or both?
They are different experiences and do not substitute for each other. Wae Rebo is a Manggarai village reached only on foot — a 2–3 hour trek after a 4–5 hour drive, always with an overnight in the village as a 2-day, 1-night arrangement. Bena is a drive-up Ngada village with megalithic architecture and no trek at all.
On a west-to-east crossing you can do both: Wae Rebo first, then Ruteng, then Bena on the road east. Most guests also pair the highlands with the boat side — the sea is our sister brand Komodo Luxury’s territory, while we run the ground. Sea first works best: you finish the boat leg rested before the mountain roads begin.

Visiting Bena Well
Bena is somebody’s home before it is a destination. Your driver-guide handles the introductions; these are the things worth knowing before you walk in.
Sign the guest book
Entry is a small donation made at the gate when you sign in. It funds village upkeep, and we confirm the current amount before you travel.
Dress modestly
Covered shoulders are appreciated. Bajawa sits high and cool, so a light layer is comfortable as well as respectful.
Ask before photographing
Especially elders and anyone working at a loom. Most people say yes; being asked is the point.
Buy ikat from the weaver
Buy directly from the person who made it and the money stays in the village rather than in a shop three towns away.
Ceremonies come first
Ceremonies occasionally close parts of the village. Your driver-guide checks ahead that morning so the afternoon is not wasted.
Come late in the day
The tour buses arrive at midday. We schedule Bena for late afternoon, when the light is gold on Inerie and the terraces are quiet.

No. Bajawa is around eight hours of mountain driving each way, so the minimum realistic shape is 3 days with 2 nights. Day trips to Bena only work from Bajawa itself, which is about 30 minutes away.
02 Is Bena open every day, and what does entry cost?
The village welcomes visitors daily in daylight hours, though parts may close for ceremonies. Entry is a small donation paid at the gate when you sign the guest book; we confirm the current amount before you travel.
03 What vehicle do you use, and is it private?
A private Innova, Fortuner, Hiace or Alphard-class vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide — the same fleet that runs our daily Komodo Airport transfers. The daily rate is per vehicle, not per person.
04 Can we continue to Kelimutu instead of driving back?
Yes — that is what we usually recommend. Bena becomes Day 2 of the 3–4 day Kelimutu overland; you continue east through Ende to Moni and fly back from Ende or Maumere instead of retracing the road.
05 When is the best time to visit Bajawa and Bena?
The dry months from about April to November give the clearest views of Mount Inerie and the easiest mountain driving. Bajawa is high and cool year-round, so pack a light jacket for mornings and evenings.
