From Komodo Airport to Komodo Island: The Complete Route

There is no road to Komodo Island. The real route is a chain: fly into Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, take a short car transfer of about ten minutes to the harbour, then board a boat into Komodo National Park. We run the ground leg; the boats, from open trips to liveaboards, are run by our parent company, Komodo Luxury.

Leg 1: landing at Komodo Airport

Komodo Airport is compact, which works in your favour. From wheels-down to the arrivals kerb is usually a matter of minutes rather than the hour you may be used to at bigger hubs. Your driver waits at arrivals with a name board, helps with the bags and walks you straight to the car. Leg 2: airport to the harbour

This is the shortest leg of the whole journey, and the one people most often overestimate. The marina beside the Meruorah hotel is about seven minutes from the terminal, and the main harbour area is roughly ten. We time your pickup to your boat’s check-in, load the luggage once, and hand you over at the jetty with time to spare. One thing worth checking before the day itself: not every boat leaves from the same spot. Some operators board at the marina, others at the main harbour jetties a few minutes further along the waterfront, and your ticket or booking confirmation names the meeting point. Give us the boat name and we drop you at the right gate, not just the right neighbourhood. It is a small detail, but at six in the morning with bags in hand, it is the detail that matters.

Leg 3: the boat into Komodo National Park

This is the part of the chain we deliberately do not sell. Komodo Island sits inside a national park that is reached only by sea, and the sailing side of the family business belongs to Komodo Luxury. You have three broad choices. Why the morning matters

Komodo day boats leave Labuan Bajo early in the morning, and this single fact should shape your whole plan. If your flight lands in the afternoon, the day boats are already deep inside the park, so the practical play is to arrive the day before, sleep in town and board fresh at dawn. Most of our guests do exactly this: we meet the afternoon flight, run the airport to hotel transfer, and schedule the harbour run for the next morning before the sun is properly up.

The tightest version of the plan is trying to land from Bali and step onto a day boat the same morning. Be careful with that one: the early arrivals often touch down after the day fleet has already left the harbour. A liveaboard with a later boarding window, or simply a night in town, is the safer chain, and it turns a stressful sprint into an easy morning.

One detail from our own pickup coordination board is worth knowing: Meruorah, the hotel that sits right on the marina, logs 32 pickups on our board, and guests who sleep there can simply walk to their boat at dawn. If your boat leaves from the marina, staying beside it turns the morning from a schedule into a stroll. Wherever you stay, give yourself buffer: your skipper confirms the exact departure time, and we set the pickup so you arrive before check-in opens, not as the lines are being cast off.

The return leg

The chain runs in reverse too, and it deserves the same planning. Day boats come back into Labuan Bajo toward the end of the afternoon; liveaboards disembark on their published morning. The same driver team meets you at the jetty and runs you to your hotel, or straight to the airport if you are flying out. If you are booking a flight for the same day your boat returns, leave a generous buffer between the scheduled return and departure: the sea keeps its own timetable, and no airline waits for a slow crossing. Fees to budget for the trip

• Komodo National Park entry: USD 40 per person, paid once per trip, not per day. A three-day liveaboard pays it one time.
• Drone permit: USD 130, once per trip, and only if you plan to fly one inside the park.
• The boat itself: varies by vessel and trip type, so check current prices with Komodo Luxury.
• Ground transfers: quoted on WhatsApp once we have your flight number and boat departure time.
