The terminal, in plain terms

If you are picturing a sprawling international hub, recalibrate. Komodo Airport has one modern but compact terminal sitting just above Labuan Bajo town. You step off the plane, walk a short distance into the building, and collect your bag from a small baggage hall — on a normal day your luggage appears within minutes, not the half-hour you may be used to elsewhere.

Most guests arrive on domestic flights, usually the short hop from Bali (about an hour in the air) or a direct service from Jakarta. The airport gets genuinely busy only in short bursts, when two or three flights land close together in the late morning — exactly the window when most boat travellers arrive. If your plan involves going straight to the harbour, that burst is worth knowing about, and it is why we schedule pickups against your flight number rather than a fixed clock time.

Money and ATMs

Here is the honest version: do not build your cash plan around the airport. The machines at and around the terminal are few, and in high season they can simply run empty by the weekend. The reliable move is to withdraw in town, where bank ATMs (BRI, BNI, Mandiri) line the main road and are restocked far more often.

You will want cash in Labuan Bajo more than you might expect. Larger hotels and restaurants take cards, but warung meals, small shops, village donations and tips are cash territory. If you are connecting from Bali, the simplest habit is to land with a reasonable amount of rupiah already in your pocket and treat the town ATMs as your top-up, not your lifeline.

SIM cards and data

One operator matters in Flores: Telkomsel. Around Labuan Bajo town most networks are fine, but the moment you head inland — toward Ruteng, Bajawa or the Kelimutu side of the island — Telkomsel is the network our drivers rely on, because it keeps a signal where others give up.

You can buy a SIM at the airport counters, and it works, but town shops sell the same card and data packages for less. If you depend on an eSIM, set it up before you fly; sorting digital plans over airport Wi-Fi is nobody’s favourite first hour in Flores. The pickup point: where your driver actually waits

This is the easiest part of the whole airport. There is one arrivals exit, opening onto a small forecourt — no maze of doors, no competing terminals. Labuan Bajo has no metered taxi rank, so airport transport runs on prebooked cars: hotel shuttles and drivers like ours. That said, do not cut it to the bone: the late-morning wave that brings arrivals in also pushes departures out, and a boat trip that lands you back at the harbour at nine leaves comfortable — not endless — margin for a midday flight.
