Self-drive rental cars barely exist here — there is no international rental counter at Komodo Airport — and the Trans-Flores Highway is genuine mountain driving. Why self-drive barely exists in Labuan Bajo
Komodo Airport is small. You walk off the plane, cross one arrivals hall, and you are outside. There is no Hertz, no Avis, no row of branded desks with keys to hand over — the transport waiting out front is pre-booked drivers holding name boards. That is not a gap in the market; it reflects how transport actually works on Flores. The standard local product has always been a car with a driver, priced as one thing, because that is what the roads here demand.
An informal self-drive market does exist, but it is mostly scooters for getting around town. A car handed over without a driver is a rare, handshake-level arrangement. If the bumper meets a wall on a mountain bend, the question of who pays gets settled on the spot, in Indonesian, with no insurance company on your side of the table. The Trans-Flores Highway makes the decision for you
The real reason to skip self-drive is not the paperwork. It is the road. The Trans-Flores Highway leaves Labuan Bajo and immediately starts climbing: hairpin after hairpin, single-lane bridges, fog patches that arrive without warning, and slow trucks that must be overtaken on faith. Livestock and dogs treat the tarmac as their own. After dark there is almost no lighting, and fuel stations thin out fast once the town is behind you.
Distances deceive, too. The drive to the Wae Rebo trailhead is only a modest number of kilometres on the map, yet it takes four to five hours of continuous bends. Mapping apps are consistently optimistic about Flores; our drivers, who run these routes every week, are not. A holiday spent staring at the next hairpin is not much of a holiday, which is the quiet argument that settles most of these debates: with a driver, the mountain scenery is yours to watch.
What a private driver actually costs
The benchmark price is simple: a Toyota Innova with an English-speaking driver-guide runs around USD 95 per day. A Hiace van for bigger groups, a Fortuner SUV for rougher stretches and Alphard-class vehicles for VIP arrivals are all quoted on WhatsApp against your dates and route. Multi-day trips scale honestly — a six-day crossing of Flores is simply six times the daily car rate, plus your own hotels along the way.
The exception worth knowing is Wae Rebo, which is never a day trip. It is a two-day, one-night arrangement at around USD 190, including the overnight in the traditional village, with the village donation paid separately. What the driver does that a rental car cannot
Our pickup coordination board has logged 372 hotel runs from the airport, from Ayana Komodo — our single most common drop-off, with roughly 75 logged pickups — down to the smallest guesthouse lane in town. That repetition is the product. A driver who works these roads daily knows which viewpoint is clear at 5 pm, when the Batu Cermin cave is quiet, how long Cunca Wulang really takes after rain, and which warung on the Ruteng road is worth stopping for.

Scooters are fine for the strip of restaurants and dive shops along the waterfront, and plenty of visitors rent one for town.
