Melo Village and the Caci Whip Dance: A Half-Day from Labuan Bajo
August 24, 2026 · Komodoairporttransfer Editorial Desk

Melo is a Manggarai village in the hills about 45 minutes from Labuan Bajo by private car, and the closest place to watch caci, the traditional whip duel of West Flores. We drive you up with an English-speaking driver-guide; the performance itself is arranged with the village in advance and quoted on WhatsApp: +62 811 3810 5742.
What caci actually is
Caci is not a staged photo opportunity. It is a ritual duel that Manggarai men have fought for generations at harvest festivals, weddings and welcoming ceremonies. Two fighters face each other in turns: one attacks with a whip, the other defends with a round shield and a guard held in the other hand. Drums and gongs set the rhythm, the fighters sing and taunt between rounds, and the villagers answer in chorus. A landed strike is not a defeat so much as a mark — the scars are worn with pride — and the whole contest runs on rules, respect and a great deal of theatre.
When a village hosts caci for visitors, it is a shortened, arranged version of the real event, performed by men who fight it at their own ceremonies. You are usually welcomed with a short ritual, offered a taste of local palm wine, and invited to sit close enough to hear the whip crack. It is loud, fast and nothing like a hotel cultural show.
Where Melo is and how a visit works
Melo sits in the hills on the Trans-Flores road out of Labuan Bajo, in the direction of Ruteng. The drive is a climb of roughly 45 minutes — the same first stretch of road our drivers cover on every overland departure, so they know each bend of it — and the air cools noticeably as you go up. On a clear afternoon the village viewpoint looks back over the bay and its islands, which would justify the drive even without the dance.
A visit follows a simple shape: arrival and welcome, the caci performance with its music and chanting, time to talk with the performers and look around the village, then the viewpoint before you head back down. Plan on one and a half to two hours in the village itself. Because a performance involves fighters, musicians and preparation by the whole community, it must be arranged days ahead — this is not something to attempt on a walk-in basis. If you visit without a performance, the village and viewpoint are still a worthwhile stop on a city-tour afternoon.
A realistic half-day plan
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 14:00 | Pickup at your Labuan Bajo hotel |
| 14:45 | Arrive Melo, welcome ceremony |
| 15:00–16:15 | Caci performance, music, time with the villagers |
| 16:15–16:45 | Village viewpoint over the bay |
| 17:15 | Optional sunset stop on the drive down |
| 18:00–18:30 | Back at your hotel |
Morning versions work just as well; afternoons are popular because the light at the viewpoint is better and a sunset stop fits on the way home.
What it costs
Our private car with an English-speaking driver-guide is USD 95 (±IDR 1,500,000) per day — an Innova for couples and small families, a Hiace for larger groups. The caci performance itself is paid to the village and depends on your group size and date, so we quote it together with the car on WhatsApp before you commit to anything. A Melo afternoon uses only half of the car day, which is why most guests pair it with morning stops rather than booking it alone.
Pairing Melo with the rest of your trip
- City-tour day. Batu Cermin cave and Cunca Wulang waterfall in the morning, Melo and the caci in the afternoon — the classic full-day version of our Labuan Bajo city tour.
- The day before your boat. Many guests watch caci the afternoon before their Komodo departure, then take our morning transfer to the harbour for the jetty.
- The boat itself. Open trips and liveaboards to Komodo, Padar and Pink Beach are our sister company’s side of the holiday — book Komodo boat tours and liveaboards with Komodo Luxury. We take care of every land leg around them.
Book it
Send your date, group size and hotel on WhatsApp +62 811 3810 5742. We confirm the car, arrange the performance with Melo village, and pick you up at your lobby.
