Labuan Bajo with Kids: Car Seats, Distances and a Schedule That Works

Labuan Bajo is easier with children than most parents expect — on the ground. Car seats: the honest answer
Child car seats are not standard in Labuan Bajo. Most local taxis and shuttles simply do not carry them, and the local norm is children on laps. We do not think that is good enough, so here is how we actually handle it: tell us your child’s age and size when you book and we will arrange a seat where we can. Supply in town is genuinely limited, so for infants and small toddlers the most reliable option is to bring your own compact travel seat — it fits any car in our fleet and we will have it installed before pickup. Either way, flag it on WhatsApp before you fly; a car seat is easy to plan and impossible to improvise at the kerb.
The vehicles help too. Distances: everything is close
The single best thing about Labuan Bajo with kids is how short the drives are. In our own pickup-coordination records, Ayana Komodo is the hotel we drive families to most often — and even that, at the far end of the coast road, is only about fifteen minutes from the airport.

These are honest town-traffic estimates, not promises to the minute. The practical point: a child who melted down somewhere over Bali will barely have time to complain before check-in. Book the airport-to-hotel transfer and your family name is on a board at arrivals, the car cooled and waiting.
A schedule that respects naps
Labuan Bajo’s land activities split naturally into short outings, which is exactly what a family schedule needs:
- Morning — the main event: Batu Cermin cave, Cunca Wulang waterfall, or the harbour if it is a boat day.
- Midday — back at the pool. It is hot, and nothing on the land itinerary is worth a skipped nap.
- Late afternoon — one short outing: Melo village’s viewpoint or a sunset hill above the bay.
- Evening — dinner on the waterfront, ten minutes from any hotel on the list above.

What to skip with small children
Honesty over bookings: Wae Rebo is not for toddlers. It is a 4–5 hour winding mountain drive, then a 2–3 hour forest trek each way, and an overnight in a communal drum house — a genuinely great trip for teenagers, a hard one for anyone who still needs carrying. Likewise, the long one-day overland runs east toward Bajawa or Ende are too many car hours for young children; if Flores overland tempts you, break the journey in Ruteng and treat it as a slower multi-day trip.
Boat days: how the ground leg works
Komodo, Padar and Pink Beach are boat trips, and boats are our sister company’s side of the holiday — open trips and private charters run by Komodo Luxury.
