Work backwards from boarding time, not departure time
The single most common timing mistake we see is guests planning around the hour the boat leaves. Your operator will give you a boarding time, and that is the number that matters: before cast-off there are manifests to check, a safety briefing, luggage to stow and often other guests to wait for. If your confirmation only shows a departure time, assume boarding opens earlier and ask the operator to confirm exactly when they want you on the jetty. Once you have that one number, the ground plan is simple — we subtract the drive from your hotel plus a sensible buffer, and that is your pickup time.
Why Labuan Bajo harbour is busy at dawn
Open trips, private day boats and liveaboards mostly leave in the same early window, because the water is calmest in the morning and Komodo National Park is a proper sail away — boats want daylight on their side. That means one narrow stretch of waterfront absorbs most of the town’s departures within an hour or two of sunrise. Our drivers run a shared coordination schedule every morning, sequencing pickups hotel by hotel so cars are not stacking up at the same gate at the same minute. It is an unglamorous piece of logistics, but it is the reason our guests walk onto the jetty with time to spare instead of jogging down it.

These are sensible working estimates for the drive from each hotel to the main harbour area — morning traffic in Labuan Bajo is light, but jetty walks and gate queues are not.

One useful exception: Ayana Komodo has its own private jetty, and some boats collect guests directly from it. If you are staying there, ask your boat operator whether they board at the hotel pier — it can remove the road leg entirely. If they board in town, the table above applies.
A worked example
Say your operator confirms boarding at 06:30 at the main harbour and you are staying at Sudamala. The drive is around ten to twelve minutes, so with a 35-minute margin your pickup is 05:55 — the driver messages you at 05:45, you are in the car with coffee still warm, and you are on the jetty by about 06:10 with time to find your boat calmly. Same boarding time from Ayana Komodo: pickup at 05:45. From Meruorah you may not need a car at all — check whether your boat boards at the marina in front of the hotel, in which case your commute is a two-minute walk. Swap in your own boarding time and the arithmetic works the same way; or skip the arithmetic entirely and let us set it.
Which pier will your boat use?
Labuan Bajo does not have one single departure point. Boats leave from the main harbour, from the marina in front of Meruorah, and occasionally from hotel jetties. The name on your booking is not always enough to guess correctly, so we confirm the exact meeting point with you the evening before — our drivers already know which operators use which stretch of waterfront, and a two-minute WhatsApp exchange the night before beats a confused phone call at 6 a.m.
The liveaboard ground leg, done properly
We are a ground operator: our job is the road between your hotel bed and the jetty, and the return a few days later. The boat itself — an open trip cabin or a full liveaboard charter — is its own decision, and for that we point guests to Komodo Luxury’s open trips and liveaboard departures, our sister company on the water. One budgeting note that surprises people: the Komodo National Park entrance fee is USD 40 per person and is paid once per trip, not per day — it sits with your park paperwork, separate from both your boat fare and your transfer.
Flying in the same morning as your boat?
That is a different, tighter calculation — it depends on your flight’s real arrival time, not your hotel’s distance.
