Why spend a land day in Labuan Bajo

Most visitors treat Labuan Bajo as a harbour: fly in, board a boat, fly out. That is a shame, because the hills behind town hide caves, a waterfall and villages that need no boat ticket and no national park permit. We drive these roads every day — the same cars and drivers that handle our airport transfers run the city tour between pickups. If your boat leaves tomorrow, or you have a rest day between dives, this is the easiest way to fill it well.

One practical point up front: every stop on this tour sits outside Komodo National Park. The USD 40 park entry fee that applies once per trip to island visits does not apply here. What you pay on the ground are small site entrance fees at each stop, collected at the gate by the villages that manage them.

The stops

Batu Cermin — the Mirror Cave

Batu Cermin is the closest stop to town, a short drive from the harbour area. It is a limestone cave where, in late morning, sunlight drops through a gap in the rock and bounces off the walls — hence the name. A local guide with a torch walks you through; the passage narrows in places, so wear shoes you can scramble in. Allow about an hour including the walk in from the parking area. If you only have a spare afternoon before a flight, Batu Cermin plus a sunset hill is a tour on its own.

Goa Rangko — the honest version

Rangko cave is the most photographed stop on this list: a sea cave with a turquoise saltwater pool lit by a hole in the ceiling. Here is what most listings skip: the cave cannot be reached by road. We drive you roughly an hour to Rangko village, and from the village jetty a small local boat carries you across to the cave mouth. That boat is run by the village, paid locally, and takes a few people at a time. It is a short hop on sheltered water, not a sea voyage — but when wind or swell picks up, the boatmen can hold departures, and they have the final say. We tell you this before you book so nothing surprises you on the day. Bring swimwear; the pool is the whole point.

Cunca Wulang waterfall

Cunca Wulang is a canyon waterfall about an hour and a half inland, reached by a guided walk of roughly thirty to forty-five minutes each way through farmland and forest. The reward is a narrow gorge with deep green pools where you can swim, and jump from the rocks where the local guide says it is safe. It is the most physical stop of the tour — fine for anyone steady on their feet, less suited to travellers who avoid stairs and slopes. In the wet months, roughly December to March, the current strengthens and guides may keep swimmers out of the gorge.

Melo village

Melo sits in the hills on the Trans-Flores road — the same road our drivers take toward Ruteng and Wae Rebo. The village is known for the Caci whip dance, performed by arrangement for visiting groups, and for a wide view back over the bay and its islands. If you want the dance, tell us when you book: the village needs notice to gather the dancers, and the arrangement fee is quoted on WhatsApp.

Sunset at Bukit Cinta or Sylvia Hill

Full-day tours end on a hill. Bukit Cinta and Sylvia Hill both look west over the bay; your driver picks the one that suits the day’s light and the crowds. This close to the equator the sun sets at much the same time year-round, so we plan the last stop around it and drop you afterwards at your hotel or a harbour-front restaurant.

Half-day or full-day

A word of honesty about the map: Rangko cave and Cunca Wulang lie in different directions out of town. A full day fits three main stops and the sunset comfortably; squeezing in all five makes a rushed, road-heavy day, and if you ask us to plan it that way we will say so before you commit.

What it costs

Fuel and the driver are included in the car price; lunch is not, and your driver knows which warungs are worth the stop. Carry small cash in rupiah for the gates and the Rangko boat — there are no card machines in the villages.

How pickup works

We collect from any hotel in and around town. From our own pickup logs, Ayana Komodo, Meruorah, Katamaran and Sudamala are the most common starting points — Ayana is about fifteen minutes south of town, Meruorah sits right in the marina.
