Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu Overland (3–4 Days Across Flores)

The overland from Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu takes 3–4 days by private car with a driver-guide, crossing Flores through Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende for sunrise at Kelimutu’s three crater lakes near Moni. You fly back from Ende or Maumere instead of retracing the road. The car and driver-guide cost around USD 95 (±IDR 1,500,000) per day.

Why cross Flores by road

Most travellers see Flores from the water — Komodo, Padar, Pink Beach — and fly home without ever leaving Labuan Bajo. The Trans-Flores road is the other half of the island: spider-web rice fields, megalithic villages, volcano ridgelines and, at the end of it, the tri-coloured lakes of Kelimutu. Because Flores is long and the road winds hard through the mountains, the smart shape for this trip is one-way: drive east with your driver-guide, then take the short domestic flight back from Ende (ENE) or Maumere (MOF). No backtracking, no wasted days.

We run the crossing with the same cars and driver-guides that handle our daily Komodo Airport pickups — Innova, Fortuner and Hiace-class vehicles with English-speaking drivers who know every fuel stop, warung and viewpoint on the route. It is a fully private trip: the price is per vehicle, not per person.

The route, day by day

The classic 4-day shape looks like this. A 3-day version compresses the first two days into one long driving day.

Day Route Road time Highlights
1 Labuan Bajo → Ruteng About 4 hours Melo village viewpoint, spider-web rice fields at Cancar, overnight in Ruteng’s cool hill air
2 Ruteng → Bajawa About 4 hours Rice terraces, Mount Inerie views, afternoon at Bena megalithic village, overnight in Bajawa
3 Bajawa → Ende → Moni About 5 hours Blue-pebble beach at Penggajawa, coffee stop in Ende, evening in Moni at the foot of Kelimutu
4 Kelimutu sunrise → airport About 2 hours to Ende, 3 to Maumere Pre-dawn drive to the crater, sunrise over the three lakes, descent and transfer to your flight

The 3-day version

Day 1 runs Labuan Bajo to Bajawa in one push — around 8 hours of driving, with stops at Cancar and lunch in Ruteng. Day 2 continues to Moni via Bena village and the Penggajawa coast. Day 3 is Kelimutu at sunrise, then the drive down to Ende airport. It works, and we run it often — but the 4-day pace is kinder. The mountain roads are slow, and you will want the stops.

What it costs

Item Rate
Car + English-speaking driver-guide Around USD 95 per day, per vehicle
3-day overland, vehicle total Around USD 285
4-day overland, vehicle total Around USD 380
Hotels, meals, Kelimutu entrance tickets Quoted on WhatsApp
One-way flight from Ende or Maumere Quoted on WhatsApp

The daily rate follows the same simple arithmetic we use for full Flores crossings — a 6-day traverse is priced as six driving days, nothing hidden. Accommodation along the route runs from simple guesthouses in Moni to comfortable hotels in Ruteng and Bajawa; tell us your budget and we book ahead, or book your own and we simply drive. Our car hire with chauffeur page explains how the daily-rate system works around Labuan Bajo itself.

Kelimutu at sunrise

The three lakes — Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai and Tiwu Ata Polo — sit in adjacent craters on one summit and shift colour over the months as volcanic minerals change: turquoise, jade, rust, near-black. Local tradition holds that the lakes receive the souls of the departed, each lake a different kind of soul, and the mountain is treated with respect. You sleep in Moni, the village at Kelimutu’s foot; your driver takes you up in the dark, and from the car park a stone path and steps lead to the summit viewpoint in time for first light. Bring a warm layer — before dawn at this altitude it is genuinely cold — and give yourself until mid-morning before the clouds build.

Flying back from Ende or Maumere

Both towns have small domestic airports. Ende is the natural exit after sunrise, about two hours from Moni. Maumere, about three hours east of Moni, sometimes offers more flight options, and ending there adds the Koka coastline to your last day. Schedules on small aircraft change season to season, so we check current routings when you book and time the final morning around your departure. If no same-day flight fits, we add a relaxed night in Ende or Maumere rather than rush the mountain.

Add-ons worth the days

  • Wae Rebo — the Manggarai mountain village reached only on foot: a 2-day, 1-night arrangement (around USD 190) with a 2–3 hour trek and an overnight in the village. Never a day trip. It slots in before Ruteng at the start of the route and adds two days.
  • Bena and Bajawa on their own — if Kelimutu is more days than you have, the Bena traditional village and Bajawa overland is the shorter cut of the same road.
  • Extra days anywhere on the route — photography mornings, the hot springs near Bajawa, a slower Moni stay — each priced as a normal driving day.

Pairing it with Komodo

Most guests do the boat side first: two or three days among the islands, then the overland east on solid ground. Boat trips are the territory of our sister brand — see Komodo open trips and liveaboards at Komodo Luxury — while we handle every ground leg, from the airport pickup on day one to the crossing described here. One WhatsApp thread arranges both, and note the USD 40 Komodo National Park fee is paid once per trip and applies to the boat side only.
