Flores Overland Itinerary: 6 Days from Labuan Bajo to Maumere by Private Car

Six days is the comfortable pace for crossing Flores by road: Labuan Bajo to Maumere through Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and a Kelimutu sunrise, with a flight out of Maumere at the end. Why drive Flores instead of flying over it
Most visitors see Flores from a boat deck or an aircraft window. The Trans-Flores road shows you the rest: spider-web rice fields, villages that still build megalith terraces, a volcano behind almost every town, and three crater lakes that change colour. The road twists constantly — distances that look short on a map take half a day — which is exactly why a driver who does this route for a living beats a rental you steer yourself.

Day by day
Day 1 — Labuan Bajo to Ruteng
Leave mid-morning and climb out of the coastal heat into Manggarai hill country. First stop is Melo, the village viewpoint above Labuan Bajo; further on come the lingko fields at Cancar, rice paddies divided from a central point like a spider’s web — you view them from a small hill above the valley. Ruteng is a cool, quiet market town; bring a layer, because evenings up here feel nothing like the harbour you left.
Day 2 — Ruteng to Bajawa
The longest-feeling day, around five hours of genuine mountain road. Ranamese, a crater lake in the forest east of Ruteng, makes a good leg-stretch. The road then drops to the south coast before climbing again to Bajawa, the highland town of the Ngada people, sitting in the shadow of the Inerie volcano cone.
Day 3 — Bena, then down to Ende
Spend the morning at Bena, the best-preserved Ngada traditional village: thatched high-roofed houses around a spine of megalith terraces, with Inerie rising straight behind. Villagers weave and sell ikat on their porches; an entrance donation is collected at the gate. After lunch, descend to the coast road and follow it to Ende, stopping at Penggajawa beach where the shore is heaped with blue-green pebbles.
Day 4 — Ende to Moni
A short driving day on purpose. Moni is the village below Kelimutu, and sleeping here is what makes tomorrow’s sunrise civilised instead of brutal. Use the afternoon for a walk through the rice terraces or simply rest — by this point in the crossing, most guests are glad of it.
Day 5 — Kelimutu sunrise, then the coast to Maumere
Pre-dawn start: a winding drive up from Moni, then a walk to the summit viewpoint for first light over the three crater lakes, each a different colour and each liable to change it. Back in Moni for breakfast, then the coast road east — Paga’s wide bay is the classic lunch stop — arriving in Maumere by late afternoon.
Day 6 — Maumere and your flight out
An easy morning, then your driver drops you at Maumere airport for a domestic flight onward. If your schedule needs it, the same itinerary compresses to five days by combining days 3 and 4 — tell us your dates and we will say honestly whether the maths works.
What it costs
The car and English-speaking driver-guide cost around USD 95 per day, so the six-day crossing works out at about USD 570 for the vehicle, covering the driver’s fuel, meals and accommodation along the way. Hotels, your own meals and small entrance donations at villages and viewpoints are on your side; we book the hotels for you at your budget level or simply advise, as you prefer. There is no Komodo National Park fee on this route — the USD 40 park fee applies only to the islands, once per trip, and this itinerary stays on land.
