Flying Back from Ende or Maumere: Finishing Your Flores Overland

The smart way to finish a Flores overland is one-way: cross the island by private car, then fly out of Ende or Maumere instead of retracing days of mountain road back to Labuan Bajo. Why you fly back instead of driving back
The Trans-Flores road is magnificent in one direction and punishing in two. Driving from Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu takes three to four days done properly — Ruteng’s spider-web rice fields, Bena’s megalithic village near Bajawa, sunrise over the crater lakes at Moni. Driving the same road back adds nothing except the same days in reverse and a tired group at the end of them.
So the standard shape of the trip, and the way we run it, is a loop closed by air: overland east with your driver-guide, then a short domestic flight back toward Bali from one of eastern Flores’ two airports. Every Kelimutu overland we operate is planned around this fly-back from day one — which airport you choose decides the length and flavour of your final day.
Ende: the short exit
Ende is the closest airport to Kelimutu. From Moni, the village at the base of the crater lakes, the drive down to Ende is roughly 1.5–2 hours — short enough that you can watch sunrise on the summit, walk back down for breakfast, and still make an afternoon at the coast before your flight day. The airport is H. Hasan Aroeboesman, a small field right at the edge of town.
Choose Ende when your trip is the compact 3–4 day Kelimutu overland and your priority is getting back to Bali or Labuan Bajo’s world of boats with the fewest extra hours on the road. The trade-off is a thin flight schedule: small aircraft, few departures, and routings that change season to season — more on that below.
Maumere: the extra day, and what it buys
Maumere sits further east, roughly 3–4 hours’ drive from Moni along a coastal road that is a genuine pleasure rather than a chore. Its airport, Frans Xavier Seda, serves the largest town in eastern Flores. Adding Maumere stretches the overland by about a day, and that day is not padding: you descend from the volcano highlands to the sea, and the arrival into Maumere feels like a finish line rather than an exit ramp.
Choose Maumere when you have the extra day and want the crossing to feel complete — Labuan Bajo to the far end of Flores. A full six-day crossing of the island works out as six car-days at USD 95 (±IDR 1,500,000) each; hotels along the route and your flight out are arranged separately and quoted on WhatsApp.

The honest word on flights
Neither airport is Bali. Both are served by small turboprop aircraft on thin schedules — often a single departure a day on a given route, sometimes none — and the routings toward Bali or via Kupang genuinely change from season to season. We deliberately do not print a timetable here, because any timetable we printed would eventually be wrong.
What we tell every overland guest instead: check the current schedules for both Ende and Maumere before you lock the direction of your trip, book the flight as early as you book the car, and reconfirm it a few days before departure. Two more practicalities from the small-plane world: baggage allowances are tighter than on the Bali jets, so check your fare’s limit, and if you have an international connection out of Bali, keep a buffer — do not stack a turboprop hop and a long-haul flight on the same afternoon.

One sequencing tip drawn from years of running this: if your Flores plan includes Komodo boat days, do the sea first. Land in Labuan Bajo, run your open trip or liveaboard with Komodo Luxury, then start the overland east — that way a weather-shifted boat schedule can never eat into fixed flight bookings at the far end of the island.
