Bena Traditional Village & Bajawa from Labuan Bajo

Bena is a megalithic village of the Ngada people at the foot of Mount Inerie, about 30 minutes south of Bajawa and a full day’s drive east of Labuan Bajo. We run it as a private 3–4 day overland — car and English-speaking driver-guide around USD 95 (±IDR 1,500,000) per day — or as one etape of the longer Kelimutu crossing.

What makes Bena worth the drive

Bena is the best known of the Ngada megalithic villages and among the oldest continuously inhabited places on Flores: two facing rows of high-roofed wooden houses step down a stone-terraced ridge, with megalith slabs and ancestor shrines — the carved ngadhu poles and the miniature bhaga houses — standing in the central plaza. Mount Inerie, a near-perfect volcanic cone, rises directly behind. And it is a living village, not a museum: families cook, dry coffee and weave ikat between the monuments, and visitors are welcomed with a guest book and a small entry donation at the gate.

Walk to the small viewpoint at the far end of the terraces in late afternoon: the ridge drops away toward the south coast, the light goes gold on Inerie, and the midday tour buses are long gone. That timing is exactly why we schedule Bena for late afternoon on our overland runs.

Getting there from Labuan Bajo

There is no shortcut. Bajawa sits roughly halfway across Flores and the Trans-Flores road earns its reputation for bends, so driving it in one push takes around 8 hours. We split the journey in Ruteng and treat the road — Melo, the Cancar spider-web rice fields, the ridgeline villages — as part of the trip rather than an obstacle.

The 3-day itinerary, 2 nights

Be honest with yourself about Day 3: the return leg is around 8 hours. If that sounds punishing, take a 4-day pace with a second night in Ruteng on the way home — or better, do not come back at all.

Better still: make it an etape of the Kelimutu overland

Bena sits naturally on Day 2 of our Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu overland. Instead of retracing the road west, you continue east to Ende and Moni, catch sunrise over Kelimutu’s three crater lakes, and fly back from Ende or Maumere. Same daily rate, no repeated kilometres — for roughly one extra day you trade a long return drive for one of Indonesia’s great sunrises.

What it costs

Prices are per vehicle, not per person — an Innova suits couples and small families, a Hiace takes larger groups; see the fleet. We confirm the current Bena donation amount before you travel so there are no surprises at the gate.

Village etiquette

• Sign the guest book and make the entry donation — it funds village upkeep.
• Dress modestly; covered shoulders are appreciated.
• Ask before photographing people, especially elders and anyone working at a loom.
• Buy ikat directly from the weaver who made it — the money stays in the village.
• Ceremonies occasionally close parts of the village; your driver-guide checks ahead that morning.

Bena or Wae Rebo — or both?

They are different experiences and do not substitute for each other. Wae Rebo is a Manggarai village reached only on foot — a 2–3 hour trek after a 4–5 hour drive, always with an overnight in the village as a 2-day, 1-night arrangement (around USD 190); it is never a day trip. Bena is a drive-up Ngada village with megalithic architecture and no trek. On a west-to-east crossing you can do both: Wae Rebo first, then Ruteng, then Bena on the road east.
