Why Families Need a Different Approach to LBJ Pickup

Travelling with kids changes the airport transfer entirely. The 40-metre walk from arrivals to a curb taxi is a different walk when you are also carrying a sleeping toddler, a stroller, and the assortment of stuff that small children require for a flight. The “quick negotiation” with a kerb taxi driver becomes a 10-minute conversation while one child needs the toilet and the other has just dropped a stuffed rabbit. The taxi that drives up turns out to have no rear seatbelts and no child restraint of any kind. The luggage has to go on a roof rack with rope. The kids ride loose in the back seat for 20 minutes on coastal roads.

Indonesian curb taxis are not equipped or trained for family transport. There is no Indonesian regulation requiring child seats in private hire vehicles. Most drivers do not own one. The vehicles are sized for two business travellers with backpacks, not a family of five with a stroller and dive gear. And at LBJ specifically — a small regional airport where most arrivals are tourism-focused — the kerb taxi pool skews even further toward “fast turnaround for solo travellers” rather than “patient family service.”

A pre-booked family airport transfer with child seat changes the dynamic completely. The right-sized vehicle is parked. The child seats are already installed. The driver knows the family is arriving and has scheduled the slot to take the time it takes — not to rush you off the kerb so the next fare can pull up.

How Our Family Service Works

Family bookings include child restraints free, scheduled extra arrival time, and a vehicle sized to the actual family.

  1. You book online or via WhatsApp with the number of adults and kids, ages of children, presence of stroller, and luggage count. We assign the right vehicle (Innova for 4 pax, Hiace for 5+ or anyone with significant luggage).
  2. Child seats confirmed. Infant bucket (rear-facing, for 0–12 months and up to 13kg) and forward-facing booster (for 4–8 years and up to 36kg) are sourced for your booking. These are inspection-checked between every family booking — same as any safety-critical equipment.
  3. T-90 minutes before landing. Driver pre-positions at LBJ. Child seats installed in the vehicle, fitted to the rear seat with appropriate latch or seatbelt anchoring. Climate set to 22°C. Cold water and snack box prepared.
  4. T-30 minutes. Driver inside the arrivals hall holding a name board with the lead booker’s name. They are positioned where it is easy for a family group to see — not deep in the crowd.
  5. You exit immigration. Driver greets you, offers to help with the stroller and bags. Pace is set by the family — if you need a moment for the toddler to use the airport bathroom or for the older kid to find the lost colouring book, the driver waits.
  6. Boarding. Children installed in the right seats. Adults in remaining seats. Bags loaded by the driver. Stroller goes in the cargo area.
  7. Drive. Pace is gentle, no sudden braking, climate adjusted to the kids’ comfort. Snack box accessible if hungry.
  8. Hotel arrival. Driver helps with bags into the lobby. Family-friendly hotels (Sylvia Resort, Bintang Flores, Meruorah, AYANA) have bell-staff handle the room journey. Driver coordinates the handoff.

Pricing for Family Komodo Airport Transfers

Family service uses standard zone pricing. Child seats are free. Extra arrival time is included. No family surcharge.

ZoneInnova (1-6 pax + 1-2 kids in seats)Hiace (1-10 pax + stroller + bags)
Zone A Town & Harbour$25$40
Zone B Inner Beach / Hill Resorts$30$48
Zone C Outer Beach / Coast$38$58

Round-trip booking applies the standard 10% discount.

The Innova fits 6 passengers including 1–2 in child seats, plus full luggage for a family of 4. The Hiace is the right vehicle for any family of 5+, families with significant luggage (e.g. dive gear plus suitcases), or families travelling with grandparents who need extra room.

Vehicle Recommendation for Family Transfers

For a family of 4 (two adults + two kids in seats) with standard luggage, the Toyota Innova Reborn is the right size — quiet, comfortable, $25 base in Zone A. The forward-facing booster fits the rear seat without compromising the third-row passenger space. An infant bucket in rear-facing position is also easily accommodated.

For a family of 5–7 (two adults + three kids, or two adults + two kids + grandparents), the Toyota Hiace Premio is the better choice. Captain seats give the kids individual space, the cargo area takes a stroller plus bags without stacking, and the Hiace’s quieter cabin handles the longer drives to AYANA Komodo or Plataran without the noise that wakes a sleeping toddler.

For families who want luxury on the arrival — perhaps the kids are older and the parents are celebrating an anniversary alongside the family trip — the Toyota Alphard carries 1–4 passengers (including kids in seats) with mood lighting, ottoman footrests, and the quietest cabin in our fleet. Alphard rate Zone A $75.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Komodo Airport Transfers

Are your child seats safe and properly fitted?
Yes. We use Indonesian-distributed Maxi-Cosi and Britax models that meet European ECE R44/04 or R129 standards. Infant buckets are rear-facing, suitable for 0–12 months and up to 13kg. Forward-facing boosters are for ages 4–8 and up to 36kg. Each seat is inspected between bookings, and the driver fits it correctly to the vehicle’s seatbelt or latch anchor before you board. If you prefer to bring your own child seat from home, we can install it instead — there is no charge either way.

Can you fit two child seats and a stroller in the Innova?
Two child seats in the rear bench is fine in the Innova; one infant bucket plus a forward-facing booster fits comfortably. A folded stroller fits in the boot alongside luggage for a family of four. For two child seats plus a stroller plus full luggage for a longer trip, the Hiace gives more room without compromise — and the price difference is small ($40 vs $25 in Zone A).

Will the driver wait if my child has a meltdown at arrivals?
Yes. The first 30 minutes after landing are free. Family bookings often run a little longer at the curb — we have built that into the schedule. If your child needs the bathroom, a snack, or just five minutes of decompression after the flight, the driver waits without rushing you.

Do you offer child-friendly hotel routes?
Sylvia Resort Komodo, Bintang Flores Hotel, Jayakarta Suites, and Meruorah Komodo are the most family-friendly properties in Labuan Bajo — kids’ pool, family rooms, easy ground-floor access. AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach has a kids’ club. We can advise on the best fit at booking.

Are there any Komodo activities suitable for kids that you can advise on?
Most parents ask about Pink Beach, Kanawa Island, and the easy walks at Rinca Island as kid-friendly alternatives to the longer Padar hike. The new Komodo National Park 1,000-visitor-per-day quota means timing matters — we can advise on which session is best for families based on your itinerary.

Can my older kid (age 9–12) ride without a booster?
Indonesian law does not require child restraints, but international safety guidelines recommend boosters until the seatbelt fits properly across the shoulder and lap (typically 8 years old or 145cm tall). If your child is on the edge — say, age 9 and small for their age — we recommend the booster. It is free either way.
